Choosing the Consultants for Your Winning Team

You've made the decision to run for an elected office. Your name is on the ballot. Now make your next decision a winning one by selecting the right team of campaign professionals to help you achieve victory.

Choosing your campaign professionals is one of the most important decisions you'll make in public life. Like the choice to seek public office, these decisions should be made thoughtfully and intelligently.

Ultimately, your campaign team must be made up of professionals whom you are comfortable with personally and professionally. Consider some of these questions to determine if a consultant's experience and strategies are right for your campaign.

What should you know before hiring your Consultant?

Determine your consultant’s experience
  • Does the consultant have experience at the level of office you seek?
  • Have the consultant's strategies been effective and successful in the past?
  • What are the consultant's ideas for your campaign?

Inquire about other campaigns the consultant will be working with

  • Will your campaign be a priority for the consultant?
  • Will the consultant be personally involved in your campaign, or will you deal with other members of the consultant's staff?

Be certain to ask for references

  • Talk with former clients of the consultant- both successful and unsuccessful ones.
  • How does the consultant work? Consult with former campaign staff members or members of the state or national parties.

Reach a firm understanding of how your campaign's money will be spent

  • How are spending decisions made?
  • Don't be reluctant to negotiate the price of consultant's services.

What type of Campaign professional do you need?

Your General Consultant
Most people wouldn't dream of going to court without a lawyer, a hospital without a doctor. If you are serious about winning you need professional advice.

Your Pollster
Conducts survey research to determine the opinions and issues of concern within the electorate.

Your Media Consultant
Creates and produces paid media for your campaign- the television and radio ads your campaign might use.

Your Direct Mail Consultant
Creates and produces mail communications for your campaign. Some mail consultants specialize in persuasion mail, others in direct mail fundraising- which is best for your campaign?

Your Fundraiser
Develops a plan to raise your campaign funds from individual donors and Political Action Committees.

Your Telecommunications Firm
Provides message consulting and direct contact services. Deploys calls for identification/segmentation programs, tele-fundraising, or message delivery.

Your Opposition Research Firm
Do you know all your opponent's strengths and weaknesses? Do you know the ins and outs of all the issues? The odds are you don't. You'd better retain an expert.
